Classic Islamic Homeschooler!

Assalaamu Alaikum

I think to help you understand how i homeschool you would have ot understand that no one day si the same.  You would have to understand that Islam/Arabic and deen are the most important without foregoing secular studies.  So here is just an example of what a typical day is like in our household:

Currently, I am doing a unit study on "Ibn Buttata"" which is available through http://nisus.sfusd.k12.ca.us/schwww/sch618/Ibn_Battuta/Ibn_Battuta_Rihla.html.  This is mostly done with my 7th, 5th and 4th graders along with ArabesQ High Schoolers online!!  I do this often, kill two birds with one stone.

Arabic:  My children work with teh Saudi Curricula books at their respective grade levels in the Areas of: Qiraa', Fiqh, Deen, Tawheed etc.  I want them to study all their important deen subjects in Arabic.  Since i learned arabic when they were young I spoke with them while they were young and by the time they got ready to do "real" school they could study at grade level in both languages.  Alhamdulillah.

Qur'an:  My children sit together at Fajr and recite 1 juz each morning.  The three oldest then must memorize 1 page a day and later that evening, find my husband or myself and explain what they memorized and what it meant to them.  The younger ones are just working on reading the Quran w/fluency and since they are boys go to the local masjid for "Tahfeeth" program.  the 7 and 5 year old are finishing up the last Juz!

Math:  The 8th grader is using the Key to series for Algebra and Saudi 8th grade books.  The 6th grader is using HBJ 4th grade math book and Saudi 6th grade book.  The 5th grader is using JHBJ 4th grade math book and Saudi 5th grade book.  Since they are working on the same English math book I do lots of drills with them as the Arabic math books do not drill enough for me.

English Language:  I use the journal copy book method found in my book.  for the older girls I discuss in detail grammar but expect different things from them.  What is most important is that they read a chapter book everyday and narrate it.  The older one is the only one required to narrate in journal form.  The 2nd grader is learning how to read using Teach Your Child to Read in 100EZ Lessons,"  along with his brother who is 5 years old.

Family Reading:  We are currently, reading aloud, the book "Oliver Twist" it is quite big but the kids are enjoying this time with me.  After this book, we might start on a biography.  Not sure which as we kind of go with the flow.

Social Studies / Geography:  Since studying Ibn Buttata we travel with him and study on the internet the places he traveled and the people he met.  When we travel to the states inshallah we may pick up some chapters books relating to that time period.  I think SS is studied to experience.

Science:  My younger ones study this through experience and journal writing.  The older ones are using Quran and the Saudi curriculum books in Arabic.

I try to start classes at Fajr, but do not have a heart attack anymore if we are running behind.  Ok Ok I am not a morning person.  Let's say my dh starts them and i finish them.  Our classes are never ending and we use the structure of our day to define what we do and when to accomplish out tasks.

I love orderliness and structure this comes from a husband who expects the kids to eat at a certain time and sleep at a certain time.  Allahu Aleem it works for us.

I only pray to Allah (swt) that he accepts my efforts, guides me along the
way, gives my children the oppurtunity to really learn from what I am teaching them, and give me PATIENCE.  Inshaallah.

"O Lord bestow wisdom on me and join me with the righteous" 26:83

"O my Lord!  Advance me in knowledge"  20:114

"O my Lord!  Truly am I in (desparate) need of any good that Thou dost send me!" 28:24

Jazak Allah Khair,
