Umm Sulaimaan's

Advice to the New Muslim
Homeschooler!
Many have
asked if I can send them a sample of the Academy Curriculum. This
is so hard because not one family in the Academy is the same. Each
family is quite unique and separate from the other. As we know each
of us has different goals a different style. So we try to make sure
that the Academy Curriculum reflects this flexibility.
We know how overwhelming it
is to begin home schooling. A myriad of decisions must be made, and the
choices in teaching materials seem overwhelming. We suggest that you read
the book by Umm Sulaimaan called "Developing @ Educating the Islamic Child"
Even if you are not an Academy family this will guide you on your Islamic
Road to Homeschooling. If you feel a special kinship with
a home schooling group or with a teaching philosophy, read books in that
area. Try and find local home schoolers who are using the approach you
like and ask them to share what they use. Here are some other suggestions:
The most important thing you can do is find out where your children are
physically, emotionally, mentally, and academically. Understand them and
you and their styles. You may want to just cover the necessities
of academics (the 3 R's) while you are studying what style exactly
you want.
Remember that teaching your children at home is going to be quite an adjustment
for you as well as for your children. Take care of yourself. Don't over
commit. Stay at home. Find ways to make life easier for yourself.
Learn to say NO!! It is okay. Subhanallah just remember
every minute is a teaching minute and every day a teaching day.
Other home schooling parents may pressure you to try their favorite curriculum
or intimidate you with their children's achievements. Remember, Allah subhanah
wa ta'ala gave you the right to educate your children. Therefore
you must know how to do it or be fully able to learn.
Determine your philosophy of home education. If you don't have firm belief
that what you are doing is the right thing for your children and that Allah
Subhanah wa ta'alaa is in control of your success, , your commitment will
waiver when you are under stress (and you will experience stress!).
Ultimately this will lead to burn out!
Look at failures as a learn experience. Try to laugh at the stupid mistakes
you will make.
Use what you have. Your finances and resources may be limited; your circumstances
may be less than ideal. Instead of wishing things were different, look
for ways to best use what you have. Don't tell anyone, but outside
of Arabic and Religious matters the rest of what my family uses is on the
net and the Public Library!!
Read! Read! Read! Go to the Academy
bookstore and find these books. Please note: Other
than the first one the rest are *Christian reading material but if you
can skim through you will learn a lot. Inshallah

Science
For elementary
and middle school we keep our Science simple. by studying Allah's
SWT creation and keeping a Nature notebook. The children are able
to cover and understand much. This does mean that you need
to get them out and make sure they are experiencing Allah not just believing
in him.
